Lung cancer
Advancing care,
one breath at a time

Pfizer is working to transform lung cancer treatment. We also help empower patients and their caregivers throughout their journeys with lung cancer.

Lung cancer survival rates are improving, but more work is needed

About 1 in 5 cancer deaths in the US is due to lung cancer. It is by far the nation’s deadliest cancer. And yet, lung cancer death rates have been going down since the early 2000s. Advances in research and earlier detection have helped improve lung cancer survival rates.

  • #1
cause of cancer-related deaths in the US in 2025
  • 86%
of lung cancers in the US are caused by smoking
  • 226,650
new cases of lung cancer are estimated to be diagnosed in the US in 2025
  • 50%
relative increase in early stage diagnosis since screening was recommended in 2013

Transforming lung
cancer care

Pfizer has led the way in developing medicines targeting certain biomarkers in lung cancer. We’re continuing to work to change lung cancer care by researching new ways to approach the disease.

Biomarkers in lung cancer
Biomarker testing for lung cancer can identify non-inherited gene changes or certain proteins in lung cancer tumors. These changes can help determine prognosis, treatment options, and the likelihood of the cancer returning. PD-L1, KRAS, EGFR, ALK, and BRAF are among the most common biomarkers found in lung cancer.
Targeted treatments
Pfizer offers 3 targeted treatments for lung cancer. Targeted treatments can be selected based on the unique genetic makeup of a patient's tumor. We are also studying 2 additional potential treatments for non-small cell lung cancer.
